Hi!! My name is Dr. Aretha Steele. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and welcome you to my site. While I believe degrees are important, I place great value on the therapeutic relationship. This is a big decision and you have to find the right fit for you. I hope we are able to work together, but even if we don't, I'd like to congratulate you for taking this huge step towards living the life you deserve!
Here's a little about me:
Growing up, I had so many questions about the world around me. I deeply wanted to understand the painful experiences and conflicts of those closest to me, secrets kept by family, and the inner workings of relationships. As I got older, I yearned to find a way to help and support others with difficult circumstances.
During my freshman year of college, a close friend confided in me their past trauma. As my education in psychology continued, it became clear, through further disclosures from those close to me, that many individuals struggle with crises in their lives. This taught me the value of listening and sparked my interest in counseling, which has changed my life forever. A few years later, I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology from the State University of New York. I then earned my Master's and Doctoral Degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology.
As a native of Detroit, an African-American woman, mother and wife, I know what it's like to experience challenges myself. I believe that everyone can benefit from counseling in one form or another, as long as they are willing. Most of all, I believe that everyone can heal, transform and thrive—sometimes we just need to have more support, knowledge, or guidance to do so.
I have over twelve years of experience working with clients in private practice, community mental health, school based, residential, and inpatient settings. I am a compassionate and dedicated professional, providing online counseling services to adolescents and adults from all walks of life. I work with individuals struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, complex trauma, problematic relationships, perinatal and postpartum anxiety and depression, family conflicts, and stress.
I am licensed in Illinois as a Clinical Psychologist. I am also
authorized by the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT), granted by the PSYPACT Commission on 2/18/21 to practice telepsychology in multiple states, including:
Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia (DC), Georgia, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina.
I have also earned certifications from Postpartum Support International in Perinatal Mental Health and Level 1 Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
Thank you for taking your time to get to know a little about me. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or reach out by phone @ 708-419-3171. In the meantime, be well.
I believe in a collaborative approach, where you and I will work together as a team to help you learn to manage the obstacles and road blocks in your path. I understand no two individuals are the same, and I tailor our sessions to address challenges unique to you. Keep in mind, therapy works best when the therapist and client work together towards these goals. Counseling is not a magic pill or a quick fix, but can teach successful strategies that foster long-lasting change.
I integrate cognitive-behavioral, DBT and insight oriented strategies that reduce feelings of distress, regulate emotions, enhance self-awareness and improve relationships with others. My goal is to provide a warm, safe and non-judgmental space where you can be your authentic self and feel empowered to tackle life's stressors.
My therapy office is located in the suburbs of Chicago. However, online counseling services are available to anyone throughout the state of Illinois, Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia (DC), Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
